Chris MacLean came to Visual Effects from a diverse artistic and practical background. After seven years in the field of Graphic Design, equipping him with exceptional technical problem-solving abilities, MacLean decided to change vocations and began studying 3D animation. An innovator and accomplished artist, he quickly began to build his experience working on several projects for the Discovery Channel and the National Geographic Channel before coming to MR. X in 2009. At MR. X, MacLean’s natural talent for problem solving and project planning quickly earned him a position as Asset Lead on such films as Hanna, The Three Musketeers, and Resident Evil: Retribution. In 2013, he was promoted to CG Supervisor for Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii.
In 2014, MacLean successfully developed Xscan: a photogrammetry-based scanning stage designed to accelerate the asset creation process. Implemented to great effect, Xscan has reduced asset creation time by as much as 30% on projects such as Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game, Carlton Cuse’s The Strain, and Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water.MacLean’s leadership, dedication and vision has earned him marked recognition, including a 2015 Canadian Screen Award win for Achievement in Visual Effects for Pompeii. Having worked as the lead Digital Effects Supervisor on Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror, Crimson Peak, and MGM’s retelling of Ben-Hur, MacLean continues to impress with his unwavering commitment to his craft. Chris MacLean recently served as the VFX Supervisor for the Netflix western miniseries, Godless. Currently, MacLean serves as the in-house VFX Supervisor on the franchise reboot of Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall.
